Today we did the 3 minute rounds where someone stays in for 9 minutes, I’ve got to work on using the de la riva more effectively to attack the back or get a sweep. I also have to work on my grips so that I can maintain control while on bottom so I can attack better. As for my top game, I need to start using the pass where I am between a guys legs have a hand on one knee and push that down while having my other hand wrapped around the free leg and have my head down on their hip and walk around their guard. I also need to use the de la riva guard passes and the torriana kickout more effectively.

Today we learned a couple of great techniques to help counter the De La Riva guard:

The first is when you are in De La Riva, you grab the opponent lapel when with the hand that is wrapped around the leg while the other hand is holding the pants around the shin of the leg that is on your hip. The hand on the shin cannot be higher or else they can lasso it and also so that you can better control the action of the leg. You then push the leg by the shin between your legs and squat down so that their heel is close to their butt. Then kick out the other leg, push the shin away from you so that you can then re-enter the knee of the kicking leg behind their legs while using your elbow (the one for the arm that is holding the lapel) to lock down their knees. You then try to control the head, first with the hand that was on the shin then the other hand. While you are doing this you go on your toes so that your head can go on the far side of their head, control the head then walk around to side control.

The second technique is for when the bottom person defends by putting up their arms so you can’t collapse on them, the hand that was on the shin goes to the back and grabs it up while you twist your body so that you create an opening to slide in your leg to get a hook. You then put on the seat buckle and pull them towards you. If they are defending and won’t give up the second hook, you use your free leg and put your knee on their hip to apply pressure so they can’t roll out. You then start to attack the collar and if the defending hand moves away – get in your second hook and continue to attack the collar till you are able to get a lapel choke.

Today we learned how to defend against and counter against the defense of butterfly guard.

To begin, your opponent will have one knee up and the other parallel to the ground. He will then set the butterfly hooks while also having one arm around your waist and one on your arm. To defend against butterfly, you take your arm and grab the back of your opponent’s gi over the shoulder of your opponent. You go over the shoulder of the arm that is around your waist, while the other hard grabs the bottom of the pants or the knee of your opponent on the same side as that hand. You must also get your head lower than your opponents, otherwise it will be very hard to get this move. Rock forward toward the arm that is over the shoulder, lift the leg with the other hand and scissor your legs so that you are clear of the hooks, then switch your hips back so that you get into side control.

If you have someone in the butterfly guard, another way for a defender to stop the butterfly guard’s momentum is to hook their arm under the arm you have around their waist. Generally they will try to grab the opposite lapel of your gi, if this occurs – it is a perfect opportunity to perform a sweep by trapping that same arm. First lock your elbow tight to trap their arm to you, then release the grip on their waist and grab the arm/wrist/hand that is grabbing at your lapel. You keep the hook that is on the same side as the trapped arm, slide the other leg through their legs, and with the arm that is not trapping your opponent’s arm, hook your opponents leg opposite you. Then just create a little space, lean back and roll to the side of the trapped arm. Your opponent’s base will disappear and he will end up getting swept over you and you can then recover and get side control.

Starting in the opponent’s full guard, you post one hand on their chest by grabbing the gi’s lapels, then grab a sleeve and bring it across the stomach under the posting arm. Get up by standing first with the leg that is on the side of the sleeve you are holding. Then get up with the other leg, table their thighs using your legs, grab the point of the knee, on the side of your free hand, and push down while stepping back slightly. Lower your base, keep the elbows in, and cheat the knee in as well. Keeping the hand on the knee, the other hand (holding the sleeve), try to keep holding the sleeve, and grab the lapel on that side. Keep the shoulder down to keep your opponents leg from that side from bothering you. Now push the knee down, and step over and put your other knee on their thigh. Slide your knee through, grab the neck and get into side control.

Today we learned a simple pass after you get out of the guard or to use in general.

With one foot forward and one foot back you split your opponents legs. The hand opposite the foot that is forward is used to push the knee down to the ground, while the other arm hooks the leg by going under the knee and you grab the opponent’s belt, if not possible grab the gi and keep it tight. You put your head no higher then belt level while looking toward the side with the arm hooked and while keeping your shoulder heavy. Step your back leg over the leg that is down, if they try to hook your leg then sprawl back but keep your base and the shoulder heavy. Work your legs around to the side, and push them away so that you can get the knee closest to their feet under their knee to they can’t turn back into you. If they try to bump or move away, stay heavy and stay with them. Once you have the knee underneath theirs, get one arm under the neck then get your other arm under their arm and hold them so you can secure side control.

Only got in one roll today due to a slightly bruised knee. Rolled with Blue belt Ronald and didn’t due too well. Got swept a couple of times and wasn’t able to establish position. Need to increase my gas levels ’cause I was tired from doubling up. He was able to get around my guard, I wasn’t maintaining my grip and even when I was on top I didn’t work the grips properly. I need to work the Toreana pass better, I’m not pushing their knees to them and then doing the pass. I also need to maintain my grips to start working the spider guard to submission or to at least get to the De La Riva to either get to the single leg or for the sweep.

As a note, with the De La Riva in place, and when you can get up to get the leg, try to get then pass a sleeve to the arm around the leg, or grab part of the gi, or if you have to grab your own lapel to maintain the grip. If you decide to go for the sweep, make sure you hook the ankle with your foot using the the leg on the outside. Then grab the other leg and go for the sweep.

Today we learned how to use the opponent’s gi to choke them while you have them in full guard.

If they are in your full guard, you try to keep them down on you, never letting them posture up. Starting from the full guard, you grab their neck and keep them down. You maintain with your left while sliding your right underneath their shoulder and start to work the gi out of the belt. Once you have it free you grab a full hand of the gi, and pass it over the back to the left hand. You then get your right arm out and pass the end of the gi from the left to the right (right arm, palm facing you). You then push their head to the right and move your arm over it to get to the left side of the head.

You grab their left arm and try to draw it across your chest while trying to also get it under their throat. Then you grab their left shoulder with your left hand and submit.

If they do not give you the arm then take your left hand and move it to the right side of their head and grab a part of the gi while keeping the arm in the throat. Pull towards you and submit. John Cho also suggested to move your hips to the right so you can get a better angle for your left hand to get to the gi.

Today we learned how to work out of half guard to get to either a submission by kimura or at least get to mount.

Starting from inside your opponent’s half guard you maintain your base by keeping the free leg out a bit to make sure they can’t roll you over. You take the arm that was under the head and move it to the other side of their head, while keeping your wight down. You then slide your free knee next to their hip, under their leg. You start to work your knee free from the half guard. If they try to stop the knee by putting their hand on it, grab the wrist and slide the arm by the head further down the arm so that you can grab your own wrist for the arm lock.

For the submission, you put their hand next to their body and while maintaining your weight on them, you pull the arm up and behind their back.

If they bump and roll you over, keep the arm lock, get into full guard and move your hips to the side of the arm lock. Move the leg of the side you moved to up so they can’t roll in that direction and finish the lock.

If they are really strong and don’t let you bend the elbow to get the arm lock then keep working for the arm lock while sliding your knee out. Once your leg is almost free, the arm that is holding the wrist moves underneath their arm and forces it up while the other arm goes to the other side of the head. Put your shoulder into their face to maintain pressure, and free the leg to get to mount.

Ok so this entry is just an escape from studying. It’s been a crazy week of suspense and interviews and more interviews. One firm is supposedly checking my references, but I have no word from them yet. I had an interview today with another firm but who knows where that will go due to the absence of some key players at the firm. Then had a last minute interview at a major bank for a contracting job and I have no idea how that works but it should be interesting to see. Nice thing is, if I can smash this technical interview tomorrow then I might be home free. If that is the case, then I’ll get to work at a firm that is walking distance from the apt. That would be a huge plus, but i still have to get past the technical which I hear is grueling but I guess we’ll see what happens. I know my stuff but there are some serious cobwebs up in the ol’ attic.

On a side note had lunch with the little lady I’m seeing and it seems we share an interest in the wonderful NBC show, The Office. Today being April 1st (April Fool’s Day) I set my FB status to me having Count Choculitis and being diagnosed with spontaneous dental hydroplosion and as we were eating she mentioned the status and asked if it was from the office. I don’t know where this will lead, but I do like this one – she’s different in that she’s way smarter then any of the other women I’ve dated up till now and she’s got a fantastic personality. The fact that she’s a good lookin little lady is a wonderful plus. We haven’t really sat down and talked about us or what’s going to happen, for now we’re just enjoying each other’s company and sharing stories. Heck we only found out what the other does today, we’ve got a long ways to go in terms of getting to know each other before we really get anywhere. Either way, I do enjoy my time with her and I do believe she enjoys her time with me – smiles, giggles and outright laughter generally accompany any of our conversations so I’ll take that as a good sign.

I’ve changed the index page on this site so that, hopefully, people can no longer track me on this blog and it’s just a little outpost in nowhere land. i won’t go private with my posts but at least people won’t be able to track me from here on out. Only problem is if they have the old page in the cache it’ll take a while before it goes away. Guess we’ll just have to see – it’s not like I’m posting anything major here – no names, no places, nothing crazy or detrimental to me or others. Ok, time to get back to my studying – till next time . . I’ll be waiting.
